A widening crack at the centre of Mission Road, off the MTN Bus Stop along the Port Harcourt–Aba Expressway in Rivers State, has sparked concern among motorists and residents, who are calling for urgent intervention before the damaged section deteriorates further.

Eyewitnesses said the crack was first noticed on Sunday, August 16, 2026, but widened significantly within a day, making it increasingly difficult for motorists to navigate the affected portion of the road. Residents fear the situation could worsen during peak hours, potentially causing heavy traffic and posing a serious risk to road users.

They also expressed concern that continued deterioration could eventually affect nearby buildings and other structures, further increasing the potential impact on residents and businesses in the area.

A phone dealer operating in the area, who spoke with a Bonny FM reporter, appealed to Julius Berger to urgently inspect the affected section and take steps to prevent the damage from spreading.

The dealer recalled that drainage works had previously been carried out along the road, linking sections around Elelenwo and Oil Mill to the affected area to improve water flow.

According to him, the road had remained relatively stable for years until the recent development, raising concerns about what could happen if heavy rainfall continues.

“We are begging the government to come and do something in this place, because if they didn't do something now, if rain falls two or three times again now, this place will sink, all of this place will sink. So they should come to our aid urgently, come and do something.” 

Motorists and residents are urging the relevant authorities and road contractors to act swiftly, saying early intervention could prevent the crack from developing into a more serious road failure and help protect lives, property and the free movement of road users.
