Successful Delivery of Quadruplets Sparks Joy in Bonny Island

Quadruplets born to Mr and Mrs Emeka Odo, at Channel Clinic in Bonny Island

There were scenes of joy and celebration in Bonny Island, on Saturday, following the successful delivery of a set of quadruplets, one boy and three girls, the first ever reported case in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The delivery took place at Channel Consultant Clinic, Bonny, where the lead physician, Dr Kenneth Abugu, admitted that even the medical team was caught off guard.

Speaking to our correspondent, Dr. Abugu said preparations had been made for triplets, but discovered a fourth baby during the procedure, which was carried out under spinal anesthesia.

“I knew it was a multiple gestation but I didn't know they were up to four. We were preparing for three,” he said.

According to him, the mother of the quadruplets, his patient of over five years, was observed closely during the pregnancy, with the medical team opting for surgery under spinal anaesthesia, with support from a specialist from the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH.

“It was a surgery done with spinal anaesthesia. Only for me to deliver the first one, second one, third one, I was going for the placenta only for me to put my hand and the fourth one was there. So nobody was prepared. I had to convert another errand nurse immediately to carry the fourth baby,” he said.

The doctor noted that the operation was successfully completed, with all four babies and their mother in stable condition.

For the father of the newborns, Emeka Odo, who is from Enugu State, and the Chief Executive Officer of Good Experience Medical Imaging in Bonny, it was a moment of mixed feelings, gratitude, and reflection.

After nearly 12 years of waiting before the birth of their first child, he said the arrival of four babies at once felt like a divine reminder to remain patient and faithful.

“Before now, this was a family that had stayed almost 12 years without one. We prayed to God and we were still persistent. We didn't despair. When God gave us one, it was a kind of projection to other couples that they should be patient with God.”

He added that he is relying on God and hard work to care for his growing family, stressing that he never started a family with the intention of begging for help.

“All I have always looked up to is God and hard work. I never started a family with the intention that I would begin to beg anyone to come and support me. And besides our Nsukka people in Bonny, when we realise that maybe one of us is having challenges, we always come to their aid. We can't beg for what God has done. He will find a way.”

Residents who trooped to the hospital described the birth as historic, with many saying it was their first time seeing quadruplets.

“This is my first time seeing four children at the same time. I used to see two, three,” one resident said.

Other residents appealed to government authorities, community leaders, and well-meaning individuals to support the family, noting the economic realities of raising four newborns at once could be challenging.

“We are equally calling on the leadership, the government to help because the economy is very hard now. It's not very easy to take care of four children,” he added.

As jubilation filled the air, one thing was clear, Bonny Island had just witnessed a moment that will live long in its collective memory, a rare birth, a stunned medical team, and a community united in joy over four lives that arrived at once.
